Tinubu Ends Emergency Rule in Rivers State; Governor Fubara Reinstated Amid Cheers and Political Tension
The emergency rule had been declared on March 18, 2025, and during this period, governance was overseen by retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as Sole Administrator. Tinubu cited a “total paralysis” in the state caused by conflicts between Fubara and rival factions in the Rivers State House of Assembly, along with allegations of vandalism of critical state infrastructure.
In making the announcement to end the emergency, the President expressed satisfaction that stakeholders in Rivers State have shown renewed willingness to resolve differences and restore democratic institutions. He also commended traditional rulers, the National Assembly, and members of the public whose cooperation helped pave the way for the resumption of normal governmental activities.
Reactions across Rivers State have been swift. There was widespread jubilation in Port Harcourt and other communities. Markets, commercial areas, and social spaces erupted into celebration as residents greeted the news of Fubara’s return. Some lined up at major junctions, playing music, dancing, and expressing hope that governance and development would resume in earnest.
However, not all responses are unreservedly positive. Critics, including opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and activist Deji Adeyanju, have described the period of emergency rule and the reinstatement as a problematic precedent. They argue it raises constitutional questions about the suspension of elected officials under emergency declarations.
Looking forward, the expectations are high. With the resumption of democratic governance, many stakeholders are calling for renewed collaboration between the Governor’s office and the State House of Assembly. They want transparency, a resumption of stalled projects, and a governance approach that respects both institutional integrity and the will of the electorate.
